About FIRST Robotics

First Robotics Logo: a white circle connected to a red triangle and a blue square.

Dean Kamen is the founder of FIRST Robotics, a high school competition in science and technology- FIRST stands for "For Inspiration and Recognition of Science and Technology". BAE Systems, the major host of the entire competition, says they "...believe it is vital that [they] help encourage more young people to consider careers in science and engineering."

One aspect of the FIRST Robotics competition usually consists of a game in which a robot that each team designs plays. This year's game is Breakaway, similar to soccer.

However, FIRST does not focus primarily on the robotic and mechanical side of technology. There is whole other side to FIRST: gracious professionalism, a term coined by Dr. Woodie Flowers, who is FIRST's National Advisor and Pappalardo Professor Emeritus of Mechanical Engineering from Massachusetts Institute of Technology.

Gracious Professionals are respectful and kind to others while avoiding treating anyone like a lesser. Gracious professionalism is an ethic of working hard, valuing others, and respecting the community. The Chop Shop works hard to exhibit these qualities.

After members have gone through high school, FIRST isn't over; many of the program's alumni come back and mentor for the team.

FIRST is a community program geared toward science and techology.
